Agrivoltaics: When Olive Groves Become Smart Power Plants

Ending the Conflict Between Farming and Energy

In Spain, land is a finite resource. Historically, the expansion of solar farms has clashed with traditional agriculture. However, the recent project by Acesur in Vilches, Jaen, marks a turning point: 5,150 panels installed over active olive groves.

Why is this a case study for automation and AI?

The relevance of this project goes beyond energy. For an agrivoltaic plant to be truly efficient, it requires:

  • Real-time monitoring: IoT sensors that measure water stress and soil temperature.
  • Optimization algorithms: Enterprise AI models that determine how much energy to store in the 3 MWh battery banks based on weather forecasts and market prices.
  • Agricultural automation: The height of the structures (4 meters) is specifically designed to accommodate autonomous harvesters, integrating robotics with energy infrastructure.

Toward Intelligent Agriculture

The University of Jaen’s experiment is not just about clean energy; it is about data. Comparing shaded olive trees to those exposed to direct sunlight will allow for the creation of predictive models on crop yield. This is where AI becomes indispensable: processing thousands of climate and production data points to refine the design of future agrivoltaic installations. Automation is no longer just about machines; it is about optimizing entire ecosystems where software and nature work in tandem.
